Vanessa Sanchez, Director of Finance Operations AI/Automation Initiatives, walks us through her inspiring career journey at Equifax. From her early days as a senior developer in Costa Rica to leading cutting-edge AI automation teams in the U.S., Vanessa explores the power of a "growth mindset" and how embracing "messy" projects is the secret to professional longevity in an ever-changing tech landscape.

From a Single Table to a Global Powerhouse

Vanessa’s journey began in 2009 in a small Costa Rican office of just 30 people, where the entire technology team shared a single table. Today, Equifax Costa Rica is a powerhouse of thousands, but the "start-up" energy of those early days laid the foundation for her career success.

"We were the ones turning off the lights every time we left the building," Vanessa recalls. "Returning last year to see the new building was surreal. It is worlds away from where we started, yet the core spirit remains."

Vanessa credits the Costa Rican "family vibe"—an innate openness to collaborative success—as the pillar of her leadership style. It taught her that individual career goals are best achieved through a supportive culture.

The Power of Relocation and "Stretching"

In 2015, a structural shift presented Vanessa with a pivotal choice: remain in her comfort zone or relocate to the U.S. to lead a massive billing system transformation. She chose the latter, moving from her developer role into more high-level strategic projects.

Vanessa views that period of discomfort as her key to becoming a multidimensional leader, by bridging the gap between technical execution and business strategy.

"If I don’t stretch myself, I don’t grow," Vanessa explains. “Change is constant and adapting is really important if you want to progress in your career.”

Leading in the Age of AI

Today, Vanessa leads a team driving AI automation in Finance, a field where the technology is constantly evolving. Her transition into this role began with a single question: "How can we start talking to our data?"

"We shouldn't do things the same way just because we always have," Vanessa says. "When you solve one small problem with new technology, it often enhances the entire global process."

Vanessa highlights two key initiatives Equifax launched to support AI innovation:

  • The E3 Framework (Efficiency, Effectiveness, and Excellence): This internal initiative trains leaders to automate administrative tasks, reclaiming time for high-value strategy. Providing the operations teams with these tools will allow us to deliver greater value to our customers and consumers
  • NextGen Developer Experience: Equifax continues to invest in their developers by providing training on AI code assistants and standardized automation, ensuring code is secure and streamlined while empowering developers to innovate.

For Vanessa, the goal is clear: Use AI to handle the "how" so humans can focus on the "why."

Vanessa’s Roadmap for Career Growth

Drawing from nearly two decades of experience, Vanessa offers advice for those looking to advance:

  1. Adaptability is the Key: In tech, change is the only constant. If you don't adapt, you won’t succeed.
  2. Build a "T-Shaped" Skill Stack: Deepen your core technical expertise, but "cross-train" in project management and communication.
  3. Volunteer for the "Messy" Project: Don't wait for a perfect, well-defined task. Jumping into a project where you have "no clue" how to solve it is where the most significant learning happens.
  4. Find a Sponsor, Not Just a Mentor: Build relationships based on respect and delivery so that when big opportunities arise, leaders think of your name first.
  5. Cultivate an Analytical and Global Mindset: Especially at a company like Equifax, being able to analyze data deeply while collaborating across cultures is a key differentiator.
