When looking for a place to start your career, it is common to think of a job as a stepping stone. Many people view a new role as a temporary stop before moving on to the next big thing. That is exactly what Ariel Chávez Venegas thought when he first walked through the doors of Equifax.
"I honestly saw it as a transition company," Ariel smiles. "I didn't think I would develop my professional career here because, back then, there wasn't even a dedicated technology department. There were only three people in IT giving basic support."
Today, Ariel is the Application Development Manager for Salesforce Technology, leading specialized teams in a company that has completely transformed its identity. His story is a masterclass in adaptability, mentorship, and why staying in one place can sometimes lead to an incredibly dynamic professional journey.
Living the Transformation
When Ariel started, the Costa Rica site was just a fraction of its current size, and his first role was in "digitación" or manual data entry, typing out customer satisfaction cards. But as Equifax began bringing more complex operational projects from the U.S. and Canada, Ariel caught the eye of leadership.
He quickly moved from data entry to a research agent for the Canada Commercial project, eventually stepping into a Team Lead role. This shift changed everything.
"It was a massive learning curve," Ariel recalls. "It allowed me to understand the core of the business, but more importantly, it taught me the fundamentals of leadership and communication that I still use today in technology."
The Power of Local and Global Mentorship
You do not navigate a constantly changing industry alone. Ariel attributes much of his career trajectory to the leaders who took the time to develop his management skills.
From local production managers to tech leaders like Jairo Quiroz and Willy Ramírez, Ariel was consistently pushed toward formal leadership training. His career expanded even further as he transitioned to reporting directly to leadership in the United States, allowing him to travel, collaborate globally, and absorb different management styles.
"I have had the opportunity to learn from both highly technical minds and people-oriented leaders," says Ariel. "Equifax invested in my growth through leadership workshops and tech courses, and honestly, even as a manager today, I am still learning every single day."
Witnessing the Tech Revolution to the Cloud
For new graduates entering the workforce today, large tech companies often seem completely established and ready to go. But Ariel had the rare privilege of watching the infrastructure be built from scratch.
He saw Equifax move away from legacy transactional systems to on-premise tools, and eventually execute a massive migration to the Cloud.
"Equifax has invested heavily in Cloud transformation," Ariel explains. "I specialize in Salesforce, which handles our sales and marketing cloud, but we work with a massive ecosystem of tools like Jira, Confluence, and proprietary systems. We have gone from being a data company to a security and technology leader that even advises local governments."
The Secret to Longevity: Adaptation
What keeps someone thriving at the same company for such a long time? For Ariel, it comes down to a company culture that refuses to stand still and a personal willingness to embrace the unknown.
"The decisive factor for me was staying with a company that constantly creates opportunities," Ariel notes, reflecting on the massive team growth he has witnessed in Costa Rica. "My best advice for anyone entering this field is to master the art of adaptation. When the company transforms, you have to be ready to transform with it."
