We often hear about career growth, but what does that journey truly look like? We sat down with Mohit Gupta, PEC Pune Site Leader, to hear about his inspiring path at Equifax, from an SRE Lead role to a Site Leader opportunity. His story is a testament to the power of a supportive culture, the importance of continuous learning, and the courage to step outside your comfort zone.

A New Chapter at Equifax

For Mohit, the journey began in September 2023. He was drawn to Equifax by an SRE Lead opportunity that promised significant technological exposure and growth. What he found was more than just a job; it was a culture built on collaboration, trust, and respect.

"I particularly appreciated the accessibility of leadership," Mohit shared. "They consistently demonstrated value and respect for employees, fostering a strong sense of trust."

In his SRE Lead role, Mohit focused on implementing core SRE principles like error budgets and toil reduction to enhance system reliability. This work quickly opened new doors. By mid-2024, an interim opportunity arose to lead Global Platforms within PEC and establish an SRE community. This challenge, though initially outside his comfort zone, was met with strong support from leadership, paving the way for his success.

The Leap to Leadership

Equifax's commitment to internal mobility and growth became evident as Mohit secured the additional role of PEC Pune Site Leader. This new role wasn't without its challenges. The primary hurdle was the self-doubt that came with a lack of prior experience as a Site Leader.

"I chose to prioritize frequent and transparent communication regarding progress, challenges, and changes, and was receptive to all feedback," he explained. This approach built trust and a supportive environment, which in turn boosted his confidence.

Another significant challenge was managing dual roles. Initially, Mohit found himself prioritizing site-related tasks over his engineering responsibilities. Through this, he learned a critical lesson: the power of effective delegation.

A New Perspective on Leadership

Stepping into this leadership role fundamentally shifted Mohit's perspective. He initially thought his primary job was to find every solution himself. Over time, he learned that his most important contribution was to build a strong foundation for others to succeed.

"I've come to realize that my role is not to be the sole problem-solver," Mohit reflected. "Instead, I need to empower teams by providing them with the necessary resources, clarity, and psychological safety to tackle challenges independently."

This means asking relevant questions, offering alternative approaches, and actively removing obstacles so his team can innovate and grow.

The Equifax Difference

When asked about Equifax's role in his growth, Mohit emphasized the company's commitment to creating an environment for success. Equifax provided more than just an opportunity; it fostered a collaborative culture that allowed him to work closely with subject matter experts across various departments. He also highlighted the value of traveling to different Equifax locations, meeting diverse teams, and accessing various leadership courses that contributed to his development.

Words of Wisdom

Looking back, what advice would Mohit give his younger self?

"Don't just execute tasks," he said. "Instead, focus on understanding the 'why' behind them."

He explained that understanding the "why" behind a task leads to better decisions, effective prioritization, and innovative solutions. An engineer who only focuses on the "what" might fix a bug's symptom, while an engineer who also considers the "why" will tackle the root cause, leading to more robust and maintainable code.

Mohit's journey at Equifax is a powerful example of how a supportive work environment and a focus on continuous learning can transform a career. What steps are you taking to grow in your own career?
