The Strategy of Saying "Yes": Mandy Middleton's Journey to Embracing Change

Mandy Middleton Edit

When Mandy Middleton joined Equifax UK over a decade ago, she didn't have a static roadmap for her career. Instead, she had a willingness to dive into high-impact projects that others might find daunting—a trait that has seen her evolve from a Senior Program Manager into her current role as Director of Strategy & Execution for Sales.

For Mandy, professional longevity isn't about staying in one lane; it’s about having the courage to change lanes entirely.

A Journey of High-Stakes Pivots

Mandy’s tenure is defined by her "dual-threat" ability to handle high-level strategy and granular execution. Her early years were spent in the Business Process Management Office (BPMO) and leading the Project Management Office Team (PMO), where she delivered a number of highly complex projects as well as supported the delivery of the major public sector contract, the Debt Market Integrator (DMI), by integrating Equifax data into TDX Debt Services.

But her career truly "stretched" during the UK’s transformation period. Mandy led a team of 10 to complete over 10,000 client migrations—a high-pressure feat she managed even while navigating the complexities of a global pandemic.

"I can remember I was actually on my hen event at a spa, and I got a phone call from a major client," Mandy recalls. "It was high impact, but exactly the kind of challenge that keeps you engaged." Her leadership during this time, specifically managing the UK COVID task force and return-to-office safety, earned her a prestigious One Equifax Award.

The "Nurture" Effect

Many professionals worry that staying with one company for over a decade leads to a plateau. Mandy’s experience has been the opposite. She credits the "open culture" of the UK office and the company’s ability to identify and nurture talent as the reasons she has never felt stagnant.

"I’ve been lucky because where I have had multiple roles, I’ve never had the opportunity to get bored," she says. "When talent is identified, it is nurtured and given other opportunities."

This philosophy of growth isn't just something Mandy consumes—it’s something she provides. A passionate advocate for mentoring, she finds the most satisfaction in seeing her team members rise. When she moved from technology into her current sales role, she was able to step away confidently because she had a team member who was ready to take the reins.

Navigating the "Imposter" Inside

Despite her success, Mandy is candid about the "growing pains" of internal mobility. When she was approached to lead Strategy and Execution for the Sales organization, her initial reaction was one of doubt.

"My first thing was, 'I’m not a salesperson. I can't do this role,'" Mandy admits. However, she realized that her deep understanding of internal stakeholders at Equifax and "execution machinery" was exactly what the role required. Today, she has partnered with the UK CCO to restructure the sales organization into a vertical model to better identify "white space" gaps and drive revenue—proving that an internal hire's cultural knowledge is often their greatest strategic advantage.

Mandy’s Roadmap for the Long-Term Journey:

  • Build a relationship with a close confidante in the organization who can act as a safe sounding board and provide supportive, honest direction.
  • Mandy encourages her teams to find 30 minutes of personal time every day that is not for work or family—even if it means locking yourself in a room with a book.
  • Recruit from within where possible. She believes there is real value in promoting internal candidates who already navigate the company's culture.
  • If you have an interest in another area, don't wait for a roadmap. Ask to shadow someone and see if you can "weave your way" into a new opportunity.
