Data Governance Director

Synopsis of the role

This role is the organizational thought leader for the governance of data at Equifax. They are responsible for the Development and Management of a nimble and enabling Data Governance Program. In conjunction with the Data team, this position will play a critical role in the overall data strategy by staying current on emerging trends and innovation in modern data management methods. Reporting to the Chief Data Officer, and working closely with IT, the Director of Data Governance will be responsible for implementing robust data cataloging, the maturing and oversight of the data stewardship network, development of enabling policies and ensuring that there is clear yet nimble oversight,  governance and processes to ensure the protection and consistency of our data assets. To support the growth in our data assets and increasing revenue while reducing risks, the director will work in close collaboration with the Data Acquisition teams and the Head of Data Modernization to execute on our Data Strategy. The director will lead a small group including a manager Data Catalog, senior DG Policy Analyst, Data Stewards, and a data process engineer. 

What You’ll Do 

  • Accountable for the creation, maintenance and adherence to the Data Governance Program for Canadian Data Assets. Ensures that this program is fit for purpose and that all policies and processes are managed actively and appropriately by stakeholders. 

  • Develops, Implements and Maintains nimble and adaptable policies and procedures for the general operation of this program and oversees the day to day operation in collaboration with partners and stakeholders including product owners, IT, Legal and Compliance.

  • Develop and support the data stewardship community while providing tools and processes for the effective execution of their role

  • Develop and maintain data cataloging including metadata, data curation, knowledge management and community building around our second most important asset, Data. Be practical and timely about providing tools for catalogs but work closely with IT to ensure moden tools are on the roadmap.

  • Work closely with Directors of Consumer and Commercial data to develop a robust end-to-end data quality program. Work with the VP of Data Modernization to automate and build quality into data operations and the data fabric.

  • Responsible for the change management of the program ensuring alignment and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Develop and maintain domain expertise on key laws and regulations application to Canadian Data sources and Algorithms.

  • Regularly convenes steering committees and DG Council to ensure consistent review of program objectives and outcomes, and address any newly identified risks. 

  • Act as an objective review and evaluation body to ensure compliance issues are being appropriately evaluated, investigated and resolved. Identify potential areas of vulnerability and risk. Develop and implement corrective action plans and proactive measures to mitigate. 

What Experience you need 

  • Proven track record of business-minded leadership

  • 7 or more years of experience in developing and implementing Data Governance, Data Policy, and Data Stewardship

  • An understanding of data-driven technology with 5 to 7 years experience in data and analytics environments.

  • Strong knowledge of Cloud-based capabilities and platforms (Google cloud an asset)

  • Understanding of leading edge industry tools enabling data stewardship and data cataloging.

  • Strong understanding of change management and a proven track record of adoption of practical and value based data governance programs.

  • 5 or more years experience mentoring and building Data Governance capacity
